MCTS centres monitor for distress/safety calls and alerts, providing a communications link between vesssels with emergencies at sea and the JRCC/MRSCs via Very High Fequency (VHF) channel 16 (156.8 MHz), VHF digital selective calling (DSC) channel 70 (156.525 MHz), HF DSC channels in applicable frequency bands and, medium frequency (MF) 2182 kHz, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
