Individuals who wish to possess or acquire a firearm must have a Firearm Licence (as mandated by the Firearms Act). A Firearms Licence is subject to renewal every 5 years. A Chief Firearms Officer (there are 10 of them nationwide) maintains legal responsibility for the approval or refusal of Firearms Licences. All Firearms Licences are held within the Canadian Firearms Information System (CFIS). (Firearms Licensing and Registration, Royal Canadian Mounted Police.)
